Whether you are currently looking for a job or intend to do so in some years to come, each one of us has to go through that dreading stage of our life; the interview! Sweaty palms, difficulty to say a proper sentence, trying not to laugh, dizziness, not understanding a single word are just some of the horrors that we hope do not happen while we'll be in front of the other person.
But an interview is not meant to scare you, in fact, the interview is also meant for you to ask questions and learn more about the job. An interview is a two-way conversation! With that in mind, here's 5 tips on how you can nail your next interview and get that job.
1. Research
Before you go in any interview, research the job descriptions, the company, the qualifications, and what you can expect. Every good job starts with proper research. So get your laptop, google that job title, visit the company's website, Facebook page, learn what the company does and what your role might entail within the firm. A good research also means learning about the company's working environment, the area the company is situated, the facilities nearby and more.
2. Confidence
Sit with your back straight up, make eye contact with your interviewer, ask questions, be interested, and bond with your interviewer. Any good candidate should be confident enough to talk, joke, be serious, and professional. And if you are shy, then practice with your family members, friends, and prepare yourself mentally. No interviewer likes a scaredy-cat. But remember to not be over-confident as narcissism kills all other good qualities about the candidate.
3. Sell yourself
No, don't unbutton your shirt or take off your skirt! What I mean is you need to tell the interviewer why you are valuable to the company. What is the unique quality you will bring to the firm? How are you different from the next candidate? Or from all the other unemployed people in Mauritius? You need to ensure the interviewer is impressed with you and recognize your potential. Maybe you work fast, adapt quickly, specialize in something, or have years of experience. Find what sets you apart and wear it on your sleeve on that day!
4. Beyond your CV
Your CV is your bible for your interview, but it is not your whole support. You may have the best CV in the world but good candidates does not limit themselves to just what is written on paper. They know far more, are passionate, are driven, are motivated, and are hungry for success. Sure, your CV is the ticket that will help you secure an interview but great candidates know that the way they present themselves, the way they communicate, the way they show their knowledge, and the way they can go beyond their CV is also important an aspect of what make a great interviewee.
5. Honesty
Last thing and one of the most important thing is to be 100% honest about yourself. Some candidates might say stuffs just to impress the interviewer but always remember that the interviewer is not looking for a Mr. Know-it-all, they are looking for someone they can work with, train, and trust. Be as honest as possible with all the details, from your education and experience to your knowledge and passions.
So here you go guys, these are just some tips on how to excel in an interview. Now you are fully prepared for your next interview!
