Mauritius 2018 was hectic. Not only was our local news diverse and entertaining, we also had a lot of exposure on the international stage! Here's a review of 10 of the standout moments of Mauritius 2018!
Viv Moris!
First thing first, we reached a milestone this year! We celebrated 50 years of independence. A lot of improvement has been made since 1968 and we still have a lot to do. Couldn't be prouder to be a Mauritian!
Mauritians On Track
As many of us know, we will soon see
trains speeding through our small island. With the first rails just being put in place, the project is sure to bring some changes in our transportation sector. Travel fast, travel safe, travel with Metro Express!
Sexy Time With Corals
Mauritians got to witness the mesmerizing "pink ocean" this year and were fascinated by what it was. It was simply corals reproducing!
A new law was introduced concerning our use of social media.
Chagos
Some people are indifferent to the situation but this case is gaining international attention and we're hoping the ĂŽlois obtain their justice.
Picasso in Mauritius
This year was also marked by the
arrival of 40 pieces from the famed artist, Pablo Picasso, at the Blue Penny Museum in Port Louis. A colourful and enriching experience.
Kreol Theater
The first fully Kreol opera, "
Porgy ek Bess", was unveiled in December and it was a pleasure to hear our mother tongue on stage in the new Caudan Art Center. Sa wi!
Proud
The first ever Indian Ocean LGBTQ+ pride was also held in our 'paradise' island. Although there were some set backs, I firmly believe the future is hopeful.
Miss Mauritius
I think one of our proudest moments was when our beloved Miss Mauritius, Murielle Ravina, was among the top 12 in the Miss World finals. Definitely an unforgettable moment and one that'll go down in history.
Gold for Mauritius
Last but not least, we have a new golden hero on our island. The young canoe paddler,
Terence Saramandif, became the first Mauritian to win a gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Way to go!
What were your highlights for this year?
