The oldest child is bossy, the youngest child is the baby and then there's me, the middle child. Growing up with an older brother and a younger sister has been anything but boring. From being constantly compared to my older sibling to having to share and accept the antics of my younger one, as the middle child, I have learned a lot.
The Middle Child Syndrome
The middle child syndrome is presented as feeling excluded due to being the middle sibling in the family. It also goes on to suggest that the middle child feels kind of lost in the family, have great interpersonal relationships and are more empathetic. While I agree with the last two statements, let me reassure you that I don't feel lost or "stuck" in the middle - in fact, I wouldn't trade my birth order for anything in the world.
Here are 5 of the main reasons why being the middle child is the best!
Great Roommate
If you are a middle child, then chances are you had to share your bedroom with at least one of your sibling growing up. This just makes you a great roommate and prepares you for life because you won't have any problem sharing anything. You want some of my chips? Go ahead and take some, I can share!
Competitive...in a Good Way
Since you are the middle child, it means that your parents probably did not have much time to devote for you. From taking care of your younger sibling and encouraging everything that your older sibling is accomplishing, your parents would have maybe even forgotten that you existed...yikes! But no worries as middle children always have something up their sleeves to be the center of attention. This makes middle child more competitive and creative to get their parents' attention and this shall prove very helpful in the future.
Mediator and Peacemaker
The middle child is often seen as the mediator or the peacemaker of the family. You know you can always break an argument if your two siblings are going at each other. Plus, being the middle child means you don't have the pressure to accomplish certain things first. Instead you learn from your older sibling and pass on the advice to your younger one.
Presidential...Genes?
It's also been reported that middle children tend to be more successful in life since they are good with communication, very independent and diplomatic. 52% of the US presidents were middle child! And as far as other famous middle children, we can note Princess Diana, Bill Gates, Martin Luther King Jr, Britney Spears, Madonna, Charles Darwin, Michael Jackson, Mark Zuckerberg, Jennifer Lopez and many more. Basically, middle children are ruling the planet.
Middle Child Day
Middle children are also so great that we celebrate National Middle Child Day on August 12th in the USA. There might be a day for youngest or oldest children as well but it just does not matter like middle child day.
So to all the fellow middle children out there, just know that you're...more amazing and you are the reason why your two siblings haven't gotten in a fist fight yet. Keep doing you!
