It's here...the Covid-19 has finally reached the shores of our paradise island and the first 3 cases were registered yesterday, but this "worst case scenario" that the media is trying to sell at the moment is in fact not a moment of panic, but a moment to help others.
I usually never post any types of global phenomenon but today is different because we are all at risk of getting Covid-19 if we do not know about the safety and preventive measures to take. I decided to share some of the measures (that you may already know about) with you so that Mauritians are better equipped to face this pandemic.
Firstly, don't panic...
I know it can be hard to resist the temptation of buying stocks and piling up for hibernation but we must understand that panicking during this situation will not help, it will only cause more confusion, distress and mental harm. While you may have the ability to afford 2 months worth of food and groceries, not everyone is in the same situation. I call upon your understanding and realizing that stocking up will not do any good. Some food might run their expiry date, some may expired due to being kept in dire conditions and no one really needs all the can of soups at the supermarket to be honest...
Panicking will also affect your mental health and you might take actions that would prove to have harmful consequences down the line. The best remedy are to stay calm, approach the issue with an open mind (not everyone who cough or sneeze has Covid-19), and be realistic - especially now that we're all swimming in a pool of fake news.
Wash Your Hands
The virus tends to get passed on from one individual to another through touching. So stop shaking hands and wash your hands regularly or use an alcohol-based hand wash to eliminate maximum viruses on your hands. It is important to do this at least every 1 hour as this will help to keep your hands clean and virus-free.
We should also note that washing hands is proving to be more effective in preventing the virus from being transmitted from one person to another than wearing of masks.
Avoid Touching Yourself...
Not in the way you're thinking. But avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose frequently, especially when you haven't washed your hands in a while. This will avoid the virus (if present on your hands) to get into contact with your respiratory system.Social Distancing
Maybe one of the most harder things to practice but which will prove fruitful in the future. Social distancing means maintaining at least 1 meter distance from somebody, especially if the person is coughing, sneezing or sick. But social distancing works best when you stay at home and isolate yourself.
While you may think you might go crazy staying at home, see it as an opportunity to:
- Learn something new
- Discover a new passion (painting, cooking...)
- Binge watch the latest movies and shows
- Spend quality time with your loved ones
- Work from home
- Understand yourself and your goals
- Being in-tune with your mind and body
- Exercise and workout
But whatever you do, don't panic-buy and/or panic-act.
