If you've been anticipating the first-ever Mauritian reality TV show, let me just say that it's a let-down...and for many reasons.
I've watched the first 2 episodes which means I've given the show 2 chances to prove that it's worth watching and each time, they proved the contrary. Simply put, Lockdown Island is a "reality" TV show (and yes I do use the word REALITY very scarcely) that's unable to live up to its own expectations.
Two episodes in and we're still unaware of the different NGOs involved or the associations that the candidates are supporting (which should have been the focus and their main reason to do this show). Instead, TV audiences get a slap in the face with countless and useless information about the participants that have nothing (zero) to do with their goals. And it's clear that this platform is just a way for the participants to promote their own agenda and themselves to the Mauritian public.
And brace yourself for the amount of fat-shaming, sexist, misogynistic, stereotyping and homophobic comments thrown almost every minute throughout the show - and coming from grown-up adults is even more alarming. And worst part (which we should not be so surprised by now) is no one raises a voice against those comments - instead, it's brushed off as jokes and "dialog entre kamarads". And the toxic masculinity proudly stands tall over the show like it's their flag.
And with an uninspiring voiceover, Lockdown Island makes a 40-minute show seems like torturous hours we'll never get back. But is there anything good about the show? I'm afraid none of the things I've seen is in any way positive and the show does not shy away from digging its own grave with even more unbelievable (not in a good way) stuff that will probably leave the audience shocked or confused (just like the weird transitions throughout the show to the participants' faces which makes no sense at all).
Stemmed from a desire to provide the Mauritian audience with a new exciting show, Lockdown Island is the reality show that should have stayed in...lockdown and never come out. The reality show is but a poor imitation of other successful European reality TV shows and misses the mark on what should have been its main focus - putting the Mauritian NGOs on the map and educating Mauritians about the great work these NGOs are doing...
While I'll give it an A for attempt, Lockdown Island definitely fails to live up to expectations and gets lost in its own inter-woven storylines which revolve around stereotyping its participants and creating pointless TV.
