I bet from the title, you thought this was going to be a rant about depression or ways how to cure it but no, it's actually an observation on what actually makes us depressed and hopefully this leads to some eye-opening facts about your life!
First thing first, everything you thought you knew is a lie! Keep that in your mind. The lavish lifestyle you see people posting on social media, the "popular" instagrammers traveling the world and living their best lives, the countless romantic comedies where the "ugly" person ends up with Prince Charming or even the group of friends who always take selfies and hang out together, all of this is a BIG. FAT. LIE.
The thing about people in this century is we've become accustomed to comparing our lives with others and a great cause of this is social media. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big social media user myself and I'm not saying it's all bad, but it has 100% lead to a more lazy and depressed generation.
Instagram, SnapChat, Facebook and so on have contributed to building a fake and online life. People nowadays care more about what others think about them online than in real life. If someone post a topless, half-naked, or even naked picture, then that person is hot and wanted by everyone (Likes Alerts). The real human attributes such as kindness, loyalty, generosity, and gentleness are shoved to the back and totally ignored. No wonder no one is happy. We're not trying our best to connect anymore, we're just trying our best to look the best and fit the "new norm".
This leads to a more dark can of worms of other mental illnesses and people feel "pressured" to be perfect online (hello filters) and to always "live" their best life. Now, don't get me started on love affairs. A number of suicides in Mauritius are due to broken hearts and it's sad and alarming that youngsters are the most affected.
Depression is an evil that eats someone from inside and they might never tell anyone how they feel, ever. It's not cured in a day or overcome easily. It takes time, peace, and discovering the true meaning of life. I'm not a doctor or a licensed therapist, so I can't give advice on how to cure it. All I know is why depression is eating all of us and where it comes from. And with this little information, I hope people can surpass it.
